THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How can I make a payment?

There is no fee for the orientation session. For classes or activities, multiple payment options are available including online payment, bank transfer, cash, or check. Payment is due at the beginning of the session and should be made in a single transaction, unless otherwise arranged.

Where are you located?

The school is conveniently situated in Finistère, just a short 10-minute drive from Briec and Châteauneuf-du-Faou, 25 minutes from Quimper, and 30 minutes from Carhaix. Finding the school is hassle-free as it is well-referenced on GPS navigation systems. Simply enter the school name or address into your GPS device, and you will receive detailed directions on how to reach us.

Please note that, due to local regulations in the rural area, it is not permitted to place directional signs along public roads. However, there's no need to worry as you will easily spot signs indicating the school entrance and its car park once you arrive. These signs will provide clear confirmation that you have reached your destination!

If, despite these measures, you encounter any difficulty in finding the school, please feel free to contact me. I am more than happy to provide you with additional directions to make your journey smoother and ensure you arrive safely!

Does using only positive reinforcement mehtods mean I have to let my dog do whatever he wants?

Absolutely not. If your dog exhibits undesirable behavior, we will work on teaching him alternative acceptable behaviors. Utilizing positive methods does not imply being permissive; in fact, it is quite the opposite. It involves guiding your dog to consistently engage in appropriate behaviors and prevent the development of bad habits.

If you would like more information, I encourage you to read my blog post on this topic. It delves deeper into the concept of positive reinforcement and its effectiveness in shaping your dog's behavior.

If I use food to educate my dog, won't he not listen to me anymore if I don't have it?

No, if the food is well used! Well used, the dog is mainly rewarded when learning the new behavior. As soon as he has mastered it, we only give it from time to time or when the conditions are difficult for the dog.  reading the dog and its environment as well as knowing how to reward at the right time and in the right way. All this can be learned and this is what I offer you in my school.

Do you offer in-home training classes?

I believe in providing the highest level of support and guidance to my valued students, which is why I do not offer home visits. By focusing on creating a comprehensive and effective training program at the school, I ensure that you receive the best possible assistance. However, I understand that some situations may require in-home training. In such cases, I am more than happy to refer you to trusted professionals who specialize in home visits.

Do you have separate training classes for puppies?

At Cani'Laz, I believe it is best for both puppies and adult dogs to attend the same training classes. This approach allows puppies to develop in an environment that simulates the conditions they will encounter later in life. However, I understand that the needs and expectations of puppies differ from those of adult dogs. Therefore, I ensure that our training methods and activities are tailored to suit each stage of their development.

I manage the dynamics of mixed-age groups, fostering safe, pleasant, and enriching socialization and learning opportunities for all participants.

What is the recommended arrival time for class or activity sessions?

Please arrive 5 to 10 minutes early before class or activity sessions to ensure a stress-free start. You can also take a relaxing stroll along Cani'Laz if you arrive earlier.

Classes/activities start on time! If you're running late, please inform me by text. Beaware that in certain cases access may be denied to maintain session quality.

Why are the Foundations Program classes scheduled for 6 weeks in a row instead of allowing flexibility in attendance?

The Foundations Program is specifically designed to facilitate significant progress for both you and your dog within the program's duration. It focuses on teaching new behaviors and establishing lasting habits, which necessitate repetition over several weeks.

To ensure the smooth running of the program and maintain its integrity, it is not possible to modify the program's duration or alternate between different days of the week.

While attending all scheduled sessions is highly recommended to maximize your learning experience and achieve desired outcomes, I understand that personal obligations may occasionally prevent attendance for a single session. However, please note that missed sessions will not be reimbursed.

My aim is to provide you with a comprehensive and successful learning experience, and I appreciate your commitment to the program's structure.

Can I participate in lessons with an entire male or a female dog in heat?

Absolutely! At Cani'Laz, I aim to create an environment that closely simulates real-life situations. I have safety measures in place to prevent any unwanted coupling during the lessons. Additionally, I understand that a female dog in heat may experience behavioral or temperamental changes. Rest assured, I will provide special attention and make necessary adjustments to accommodate their needs.

It's important that you inform me at the beginning of the class if your dog is in heat. This allows me to make any required adjustments and ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.

For the orientation session and other session, can I come with several people?

Absolutely! In fact, I highly encourage the whole family to join. Having everyone present during the sessions fosters a common understanding of how to interact with the dog and reinforces consistent training techniques at home (please see specific rules for minors further down this page).

Please note that for a person to be a handler during a class or activity, they will need to have participated in the orientation session. Therefore, I strongly encourage all family members to attend the orientation session together.

By involving the entire family, we can create a supportive and cohesive training environment for your dog.

Can children attend the classes?

Yes, children are more than welcome to join our classes! However, to ensure the safety of everyone involved, I have established a few guidelines:

  1. Children must not approach dogs that do not belong to them. Respecting personal boundaries is crucial for maintaining a safe and harmonious environment.

  2. During the orientation session, if a child demonstrates the ability to control their dog effectively, they will be allowed to participate in the lessons and activities under the supervision of a responsible adult.

  3. If a child do not yet demonstrates the ability to control their dog, they may observe the sessions from outside the working areas. A dedicated adult, who is not participating in the current session, will have to closely supervise the child to ensure their safety.

By adhering to these rules, we create an atmosphere that prioritizes the well-being and safety of both dogs and humans. I want to provide an inclusive and positive learning experience for everyone involved.

If you have any further questions regarding children's participation in the classes, please don't hesitate to contact me.

What should I take for the orientation session, lessons and activities?

For the orientation session , it is good to come with a comfortable collar or harness (attached to the front of the dog or on the top) and a leash of about 1.50 m and treats. I will also ask you for your dog's vaccination record and proof of identification, for the safety of all dogs.

Don't worry too much if you have any doubts about the equipment, as we can discuss at the orientation session what would be best for you and your dog. For activities, after booking, you will receive an email with the list of necessary equipment and if you are missing something, I will lend it to you.

Can I bring my older dog to your classes?

Absolutely! There is no age limit when it comes to learning and having fun. In fact, it is especially important to continue stimulating your dog as they grow older. I warmly welcome older dogs to our classes and strongly believe they can benefit greatly from the experience.
When your older dog attends our classes, I take into consideration any physical limitations they may have. I will ensure that the activities and exercises are thoughtfully adapted to suit their individual needs. My priority is their comfort and well-being, guaranteeing they can actively participate in a safe and enjoyable manner.

My dog barks, growls, or is afraid of people or dogs. Can I still participate in your classes or activities?

Yes, it may be possible for you and your dog to participate in our classes or activities, depending on the nature and significance of the issue. To assess the situation accurately, I encourage you to book a free orientation session. During this session, I will have the opportunity to evaluate the difficulties your dog is facing.

Understanding the unique challenges your dog is experiencing will help me determine the best approach to support you both. If necessary, I will direct you to my specialized classes for fearful or reactive dogs. Your comfort and the successful progress of you and your dog are my top priorities.

At my training center, I strive to create a positive and safe environment for all participants. We will work together to address the specific needs of your dog and implement appropriate strategies to help them overcome their behavioral challenges.

I have several dogs, can I take them to classes/activities together?

Yes this is totally possible for the activities, it will simply be necessary to make two reservations. Regarding the course programs, it will depend on the level of your dogs. This can be discussed during the orientation session.

Does my dog have to be vaccinated and identified to come to class?

Yes, for the safety of all dogs and especially puppies. Your dog will need to be up to date on his vaccines or the current vaccination protocol for puppies. The vaccines required are distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis and parvovirus (marked “CHLP” on the booklet). The identification of the dog by means of a chip or a tattoo is required at Cani'Laz because in addition to being a legal requirement, it constitutes a responsible act.
The vaccination card must be presented during the orientation session and the chip number can be checked.

If the weather is bad, are the sessions cancelled?

In most cases, sessions are not cancelled due to inclement weather, as I have the flexibility to conduct lessons or certain activities under cover. However, there are specific circumstances when rescheduling may be necessary:

  • Unsafe driving conditions: If the weather poses a risk for driving, such as heavy storms or icy roads, the sessions may be rescheduled for everyone's safety.

  • Extreme temperatures: If the temperatures reach dangerous levels, such as excessive heat or severe cold, where it becomes unsafe for dogs and humans to participate, the sessions may be rescheduled.

  • Activity constraints: If the nature of the activity cannot be conducted under cover, and the weather conditions prevent its safe execution, rescheduling may be required.

To keep you informed, I will make sure to contact you at least 3 hours before the scheduled session via text and email. This way, you will receive timely updates regarding any changes due to the weather.

My priority is to ensure the well-being and safety of all participants. If rescheduling becomes necessary, I will work with you to find a suitable alternative.
